Things that make you go, “Hmm…”

Not so much a “thing” as an idea. One of my wedding planner friends, Crystal Netherland of Grace and Lace Events, recently moved to Michigan from California. She’s coordinating her first wedding out there, and was told that the standard  is to cut the cake before dinner. The new couple walks in, has their first dance, cuts the cake and goes on with the reception.

Wait, what?

In L.A., we cut the cake after dinner, during the last half of the night, usually right before the dance floor is open. This is what happens when you become so used to doing things. You hear something that could solve a myriad of challenges, and your mind is blown, especially if you’re a wedding logistics nerd like I am.  One of the biggest inside jokes in Wedding World is that there is  always cake left over. You cut the cake at 9:00, some guests leave right after that and don’t take a slice with them. Your other guests head to the dance floor and ignore the cake that gets to their table 15 minutes later. BUT, if you cut the cake early, catering has time to cut it and serve it during the last half of dinner. “Would you like some coffee? Here’s cake, too.” BOOM.

Another challenge it solves is opening time, especially for photography. The cake cutting picture, which takes five minutes, tops, is out of the way early. You don’t have to wait two hours for it. That will give you more time on the front end of the day for getting ready shots and wedding party pictures, and more time on the back end for party, dance floor and guest group pictures. I love it. Wanna try it. This is now on my wedding planning bucket list, right above the kitten adoption cocktail hour. If you beat me to it, post pictures on our Facebook page. #viralorbust
